Supporting the local village community of Oxborough
Help, Health and Education
The origins of the Hewars and Hammond Charities stems from Thomas Hewar from Castle Rising, who died in 1619, leaving land that he owned in Oxborough in his Will for the benefit of the poor and the church in perpetuity. There are ten acres of land on Ferry Lane, Oxborough and shooting rights on thirteen acres of Caldecote Fen (known as the Poor Fen). The Charities receive an income from this land, some of which is given to St John the Evangelist Church in Oxborough.
The Hewars and Hammond Charities support the local community of the parish of Oxborough by helping those disadvantaged by hardship, infirmity (including respite care) or distress and those in need, who have lived in the parish of Oxborough for more than 6 months, or less by exception.
The Hewars Education Charity promotes the education (including social and physical training) of persons under the age of 25 years who are resident in the parish of Oxborough and are in need of financial assistance. Any parents of children in the parish of Oxborough are invited to apply for funding for educational purposes. Please contact one of the Trustees for further information.
The Hewars and Hammond Charities raise money through the letting of land and shooting rights, a small income from a Cockley Cley charity is received once a year, and also through investments. This way, Hewars and Hammond Charities can be in a financial position to be able to respond immediately to requests which are very often made as a last resort.
The Trustees consult as widely as possible to find those who might need its support and help. If you know someone living in the parish of Oxborough who you feel would benefit financially from our support, please be kind enough to inform one of the Trustees to see if we can provide help.
Recent assistance has been given to young people to further their educational ambitions and also support to a village amenity for the preservation of life.
If you would like to contribute towards our fund-raising, support or leave us a legacy, you would be helping someone in Oxborough who needs help in one form or another. Please contact one of the Trustees.
